Summer has always been the most cherished season, and many people wait all year for its arrival with great excitement and anticipation. While the world is full of breathtaking destinations, from sprawling cities of the United States to Africa’s fascinating tropical islands that feel like the Maldives, a new report by the Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) cuts to the chase. Asia is dominating summer travel trends, with over half of the top 15 spots.
Led by Japan, Asia is Dominating Summer Travel Trends
The report’s findings are based on flight bookings for summer 2024 Vs. 2025

The Mastercard Economics Institute recently released its annual report on travel trends. The card issuer’s report is based on the flight booking analysis, which reveals the top summer destinations. Japan is taking the lead, with its vibrant cities, Tokyo and Osaka, claiming the world’s #1 and #2 top summer destinations for 2025.
Tokyo climbing the ladder from the second to now the most visited city in the world demonstrates its enduring appeal for international travelers. Shanghai, Seoul, Beijing, and Singapore claimed the 4th, 6th, 7th, and 10th positions, respectively.
Meanwhile, the charming coastal city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, surprisingly made it to the list, thanks to its vibrant beach scene, cultural offerings, and a fantastic culinary scene. It ranked the 11th most trending summer destination in the report. It was followed by Japan’s Fukuoka, which claimed 13th position. This means travelers are moving away from the traditional travel hotspots, opting for more unique travel experiences.

China and India are pioneering the global travel growth, and the recent report by Mastercard Economics Institute has made it clearer. The Chinese outbound travel market has been a global engine for decades, makin it the most significant contributor to international tourism.
Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan have always been the major draws, but the new analysis demonstrates a shift in interest towards more adventurous destinations, particularly Central Asia’s Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
On the other hand, India is rapidly growing in outbound travel, with its vacationers opting for destinations like Bali, Ha Noi, and Abu Dhabi.
These two twin countries are truly shaping the future of international tourism. While travel preferences, habits, and market structures differ, they are the global travel industry’s primary driving force.
Currency Exchange Rates Play a Major Role in Fueling Travel Choices for Tourists
The weaker Japanese Yen has played a crucial role in its tourism boom
Shifts in exchange rates have proven to impact travel trends significantly. The 1% depreciation in Japanese Yen in comparison to the Chinese renminbi has contributed to its tourism boom. The economic shift is responsible for the 1.5% rise in Chinese travelers to Japan.
Generally, travelers are increasingly becoming more economically conscious. And MEI’s report indicates how holidaymakers prioritize budget-conscious choices. The cost of international flights has dropped by 11% compared to last summer.
Safety is a Major Concern in Some Regions
Fraudulent experiences in popular destinations remain an issue
Safety and security are a priority among international tourists. Because of this, they are a significant influence on summer travel trends. Holidaymakers choose safer destinations, where scams and other fraudulent activities are less common. According to MEI’s report, fraud in popular vacation spots increases by up to 28% in high seasons. Overpriced meals in restaurants and taxi fares are some of the most common scams regular visitors deal with.
To avoid experiencing these scams, Mastercard is developing preventative measures, including AI-driven solutions, to help tourists enjoy seamless adventures.
Other Factors Influencing Summer Travel Trends
Various cultural and political factors contribute to shifts in travel preferences

Beyond currency exchange rates and safety concerns, MEI’s report reveals that more cultural and political factors contribute to shifts in travel interests.
Sports fandom is a major cultural factor fueling the shifts in travel preferences. Sports fans increasingly choose to travel to experience sports events and enjoy being part of the culture. The report points out major sporting events, like the Baseball World Series IN Los Angeles, which has significantly increased tourist spending and revenue to the local economies.
The political environment also impacts travel preferences. For instance, the US is dealing with a significant reduction in visitations from Canadian travelers, thanks to the current political climate. Since Trump took office, his administration has had multiple effects on various sectors, and the U.S. travel industry is one of the most impacted. Canada has always been one of America’s largest tourist markets.
But unfortunately, some of the government’s actions, including the president seemingly suggesting Canada could be “the 51st state,” have shifted Canadians’ travel preferences. Many prefer spending their vacation money in destinations like Mexico and Europe, putting a strain on the US international tourism industry.
With many affordable, beautiful, and safe travel destinations, a vibrant sports scene, and a favorable political climate, it’s easy to see why Asia is dominating summer travel trends.
